Exploring Campeche: A Hidden Gem of Sun, Sea, and Relaxation at the Campeche Beach Resort

If you’re looking for a destination that perfectly combines rich culture, history, and stunning natural beauty, Campeche should be on your list. Located on the western edge of the Yucatán Peninsula, Campeche is often overlooked by tourists in favor of larger cities like Cancun or Playa del Carmen. But for those willing to venture off the beaten path, this city offers an unforgettable blend of colonial charm and coastal relaxation. I recently spent some time in Campeche and had the pleasure of staying at one of the region’s best resorts—Campeche Beach Resort—which provided the perfect setting for a relaxing and memorable vacation.

1. Arrival in Campeche: A Warm Welcome to the Mexican Coast

After a long flight from London, the anticipation of arriving in Campeche was palpable. The city, with its colorful buildings and tranquil atmosphere, instantly captured my attention. Known for its historic center, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, Campeche offers a glimpse into Mexico’s colonial past, but there’s also the modern allure of beautiful beaches, warm weather, and fresh seafood that beckons those seeking a more laid-back experience.

I arrived at Campeche Beach Resort in the late afternoon, and the drive from the airport took just about 20 minutes. The resort is located just outside the main town, perched along the coastline. The first thing that struck me upon arrival was the view of the bright turquoise waters stretching out in front of the resort, with palm trees lining the beach and the sun beginning to dip below the horizon, casting a golden hue over everything.

2. Location: A Perfect Seaside Escape

The Campeche Beach Resort is located in the Carretera Campeche-Mérida Km 5, about 10 minutes from the center of Campeche, making it the perfect place to unwind while still being close enough to explore the town’s historic attractions. The location is fantastic for anyone who wants to experience the beach without being too far from the culture of the city.

The resort is an adult-only property, which was ideal for me as I was looking for a quiet, peaceful place to relax. With its private beach, lush gardens, and multiple pools, the resort is designed for guests to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of the area without distractions. It’s a modern and luxurious hotel, with a distinct colonial-style architecture that blends seamlessly with its surroundings.

3. Accommodation: Comfort Meets Elegance

I stayed in a Sea View Suite, which had stunning panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea. The room was spacious, with large windows that let in an abundance of natural light and gave me the perfect spot to enjoy my morning coffee while gazing out at the water. The suite had a king-size bed, a small sitting area, and a sleek, modern bathroom with a walk-in shower and jacuzzi tub, which was a nice touch for those days when I just wanted to relax indoors.

The room’s décor was elegant, with soft, neutral colors and contemporary furnishings that gave it a calming, airy feel. The attention to detail in the room was impressive—luxurious linens, locally inspired artwork on the walls, and even a small gift of locally made soaps that reflected the region’s heritage.

I loved that the resort offers all-inclusive packages, which made it easy to enjoy everything they had to offer without worrying about additional costs for meals, drinks, or activities. This was particularly handy when it came to trying their range of gourmet restaurants that serve both local and international dishes.

4. Dining: A Feast for the Senses

The resort has several on-site dining options, each offering a unique experience. I had the opportunity to dine at El Faro, the resort’s signature restaurant that overlooks the beach. The setting was stunning, with soft, ambient lighting, and the sound of the waves crashing gently against the shore as I enjoyed my meal.

One of the highlights of my stay was the fresh seafood. Campeche is famous for its seafood, and El Faro certainly delivered. I tried the ceviche de camarón (shrimp ceviche) and the filete de pescado a la parrilla (grilled fish fillet), both of which were prepared to perfection. Pairing my meal with a refreshing margarita made from local limes and the freshest tequila was an experience I won’t soon forget.

For a more casual dining option, the Beachfront Grill served up excellent grilled meats and snacks while I lounged by the pool, and the Swim-Up Bar was perfect for grabbing a cold drink without even leaving the water. The resort also offers a breakfast buffet each morning with everything from traditional Mexican options like chilaquiles to international favorites like fresh pastries and fruit.

5. Activities: Sun, Sea, and More

One of the best things about staying at Campeche Beach Resort is the variety of activities available right on the property. Of course, the beach is the main attraction, and the resort’s private stretch of sand is simply stunning. The water was crystal-clear and warm, making it perfect for swimming or lounging under the shade of one of the many umbrellas.

For a more active day, I rented a paddleboard and spent a few hours paddling around the bay. It was such a peaceful experience, with only the sound of the ocean and the occasional call of a bird overhead. The resort also offers kayaking, snorkeling, and even beach volleyball, but I was content with the paddleboard for the day.

For those looking to explore more of Campeche, the resort offers guided day trips to nearby attractions, including the Edzná Ruins and the Balamkú Archaeological Site. Both of these sites are a short drive from the resort and offer a fascinating insight into the Mayan civilization, but I was more in the mood to simply unwind, so I chose to stay within the resort’s relaxing environment for most of my trip.

6. Cost: Worth Every Penny

I booked my stay at Campeche Beach Resort through Booking.com, which often offers competitive prices and flexible cancellation policies. The cost of my stay in the Sea View Suite was around $250 USD per night, which I felt was very reasonable considering the quality of the accommodation, the all-inclusive package, and the prime location.

For the entire trip, I stayed for four nights, so the total cost came to $1,000 USD. This price included accommodation, meals, drinks, and access to all on-site activities. I found that it was a great value for the experience and the level of luxury provided by the resort. There are, of course, other types of accommodations at the resort, such as garden-view rooms and poolside suites, which come at a slightly lower cost.

If you’re looking for alternatives, there are other hotels in the area worth considering, such as Hotel Plaza Campeche and Ocean View Hotel, both of which are centrally located and offer great access to the historic district. However, for those looking for a truly relaxing and luxurious beachside experience, Campeche Beach Resort remains the best option.

7. Getting There: A Quick and Easy Journey

The Campeche International Airport (CPE) is the closest airport to the resort, and it’s just a short 20-minute drive. Flights from major US cities and Mexico City are frequent, and I found the airport to be small but efficient. There are also plenty of taxis available, and the resort offers an airport shuttle service for a small fee, which I found convenient.

Once in the area, you’ll be able to explore the charming town of Campeche with its colorful colonial buildings, charming squares, and UNESCO-protected city walls. While I didn’t spend much time in the town during my trip, it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re interested in history or just want to enjoy a more urban atmosphere.

8. Final Thoughts: A Hidden Paradise

Campeche may not be as famous as some of Mexico’s larger beach destinations, but that’s part of what makes it so special. The Campeche Beach Resort is the perfect escape for anyone looking to disconnect, relax, and enjoy the beauty of the Mexican coast in a quiet, serene environment. From the stunning views and luxurious accommodations to the delicious food and endless activities, everything about my stay was unforgettable.

For those looking for an all-inclusive experience with a perfect balance of beach, sun, and relaxation, Campeche Beach Resort should definitely be at the top of your list.
